Having a written trading plan and following it is absolutely essential for success. I have three trading plans: one for each of my trading portfolios. At the Las Vegas VectorVest Users Group, I have made two presentations on trading plans. One was a bear market trading plan I developed (but no longer use since the High Performing System is much better for me). Yesterday’s presentation was on Jim Tebay’s “My Personal Vector Vest Trading Plan.”

Jim asked me to review an early draft of his plan and I was very impressed. I suggested some changes and he finished the plan last month. It is not so much the details of the trading system implemented in the plan that stand out. This plan is not posted here to suggest anyone follow it or use any of Jim’s trading methods.

Jim’s plan is here to help others develop and refine their own trading plans. It shows the thinking process of building a trading plan. His presentation is over 100 pages but is well worth the read. I suggest every trader study it. Beginners can use it to develop their own trading plan (keep it simple at first, Jim is an expert trader). Experts can use it to get ideas on improving their trading plans.

Jim gave me permission to post his plan here, as well as presenting it yesterday at the Vector Vest Users Group. He is very interested in hearing your comments, questions, criticisms so he can continue to improve it. To that end, Jim has agreed to watch this post and respond to your comments. I strongly encourage you to take advantage of this chance to interact with Jim. I highly respect his as a trader and a person. I have known him for a while and my trading has improved as a result of our relationship. I will be using his presentation as fodder for future posts: expanding on some points, or giving my view which may differ from Jim’s. Please join in on the conversation by leaving your comments.

For more information on trading plans, please visit my trading plans section in the directory. One of the sites interviewed me. You may want to answer the interview questions for yourself. I found them helpful.
